The Super Kids Academy head instructor, Paul Bratslavsky is preparing the class for their promotion test. Join us at 4:00 (white belts and high white belts), and 5:00 (Yellow belts and above) on Monday June 29.
"SuperKids Academy is unique because we do not sell belt programs like most karate schools do "says Mr. B. "Parents should see right through martial art programs that sell belts, or charge parents extra money for belt testing, or try selling them some special black belt program."
SuperKids Karate and Jiu Jitsu is part of the Gracie Brazillian Jiu Jitsu family tradition where students are rewarded for their progress and not charged extra money for it.
Jim Hughes, Royce Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and senior Royce Gracie student in New England says, "my kids love the program and my daughter is looking forward to the test of her skill level, Paul is really an amazing coach and instructor and I am looking forward to seeing all the children demonstrate their karate and jiu jitsu technique." check back often at SuperKids-Karate.com for news.

They learned all kinds of martial arts like Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, kick boxing, and kung fu. It was really neat because they also learned about gymnastics and tumbling and dance. Superkids karate uses a unique system of colored belts to help kids stay motivated and help them to achieve their goals. This is accomplished by teaching them how to take a big task and break it down in to a couple smaller tasks that are easier to complete. Long ago, students of martial arts would only have one belt. Over years of training, the belt would wear and tear. It eventually resembled a black belt. Today, things are a little different. We use an assortment of colored belts from white to black to break down our curriculum in to smaller and more manageable pieces. This makes the learning process fun and exciting. It is easy to learn when things are broken down in to smaller parts. It is a great way to set them up for success.
I witnessed a great example of this process when I watched artist Nancy Kramer paint our mural in the school which spans across our whole wall. It is amazing to say the least. Instead of painting the whole mural all at once, Nancy separated her project in to more manageable tasks, and each day she would work on a small piece of the wall, little by little, step by step to complete her project. It was exciting to watch Nancy because it reminded me of the same process that I experienced learning martial arts when I was young. Looking back at Nancy's mural it is hard to imagine the final project being completed without breaking it up into steps.
As a teacher and student of martial arts, I really believe in what I teach because it has helped me in my life to stay focused and motivated while ...

Did you know that on December 1, 2007, Paul Bratslavsky (AKA Mr.B.), was spotted at the very first "Live the Legend" College MMA Challenge casting call here in West Hartford, CT. This was an event held for college students from all over the country looking to compete in the first college MMA challenge as well as to get a chance to be part of the "Live the Legend" MMA Challenge show. We were thankful to be able to get the chance to interview Paul Bratslavsky at this show.
Paul: “Thanks Dave. It’s a pleasure to be here.”
Dave: “Well Paul, we know you’re a jiu jitsu coach and kid’s martial arts teacher. What role does college play in your life?”
Paul: “I believe that college is very important, not only for short-term career goals, but also for the educational process that it teaches
us.”
Dave: “I know a lot of us are wondering: how can a college kid
make time to train for the MMA Challenge while still making it to classes and keeping up with a busy party. . . ahem, social schedule?”
Paul: “When I was growing up, my parents made sure to keep me busy. When I was in school I played football, attended my martial arts
classes three times a week, and still had time to do my homework. All while staying out of trouble (*laughs*). College kids find time to do the things that are important to them, and training in MMA is one pursuit that’s actually worth the effort.”
Dave: “What made you decide to be part of the “Live the Legend
MMA Challenge?”
Paul “I have been teaching martial arts for over 5 years, and I get a sense that a lot of my students see me as only a teacher. ...

As a teacher, I always enjoy observing the way young students interact with their parents, siblings, and friends. It reminds me of how young we all used to be, and how we used to perceive every situation from a creative and imaginative point of view. As we grow up we tend to lose a little of our imagination and creativity. This reminds me of a story I would like to share that demonstrates how valuable childlike creativity can be.
It involves a truck that got stuck while driving through tunnel. Firefighters and tow truck drivers were on the scene, and everybody had their own way of trying to get the truck out. Some suggested forcing the truck through the tunnel by pushing it out from behind, while others insisted that it be pulled out backwards through the entrance. Well, they all tried and tried and kept on trying. Nothing was working. The truck was wedged in too hard between the ground and the tunnels ceiling. There was a boy observing the situation from the side with his parents. He just kept smiling while everybody struggled to get the truck out of the tunnel. After a while he turned to his mother and inquired, I wonder how come they dont let the air out of the tires to make the truck smaller.
Every time I teach a childrens class I notice how creative and vibrant all of my students are, and realize that as their teacher I need to be able to create the type of environment that will engage their imaginations in a fun and safe way. In both my practice and my teaching, martial arts have always been a creative outlet. Practicing martial arts offers children a way to express their creativity, and gives them the confidence to feel comfortable doing ...

Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Trains Hartford S.W.A.T. Team
Approximately 30 members of Jim Hughes and Royce Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Schools of Self Defense were on hand to help the Hartford SWAT Team learn “less than lethal” restraint strategy.
Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu is known for its effective self defense and fighting strategy. It was initially popularized by Royce Gracie in the first Ultimate Fighting Championship. Over 10 years later, the initial debut of Gracie Jiu Jitsu has become a worldwide phenomena and the UFC has become one of many venues highlighting what is now a new sport in its own right, Mixed Martial Arts or MMA. While the media hype is centered on the fight venues such as ION TV’s BoDogFights and Spike TV’s Ultimate Fighter, there are some who remain focused on the original purpose of jiu jitsu or jujutsu as it is sometimes spelled. Jim Hughes, Royce Gracie’s representative in New England is one of those diehards. “Hey, I do this because it is fun, and because my regular job involves running programs that monitor dangerous criminals, self defense is the reason we do what we do here.”
The Hartford SWAT Team apparently values these ideas as well. They recently attended a training session at Jim Hughes and Royce Gracie’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School in West Hartford CT, the center of activity for Legendary Champion Royce Gracie in New England with locations in Boston MA, Newton MA, Agawam MA, Danbury CT, Southington CT, New Haven CT, Norwich CT, Glastonbury CT, UCONN/STORRS CT, Manchester CT, and Puerto Rico.
Lt. Rodriguez organized the event and said this about it, “The SWAT Team is running in when everyone else is running away our guys really enjoyed this training and appreciate the help.” Lt. Rodriguez is also the co-founder with ...

SuperKids-Karate Assistant Instructor Billy Pola, Tae Kwon Do high red belt and Jiu-Jitsu Blue belt, has always wanted to receive his higher education from Wheelock College located in Boston. Wheelock was a perfect fit for Billy because it is one of the best schools in the nation for social work. Billy has wanted to be a social worker from the time he was a wee Superkid.
